Compression Socks Review

Options are expanding for fans of compression socks

More runners are turning to compression socks for their performance-boosting benefits, and on the surface, the claims make sense: compression socks reduce muscle vibration and promote blood flow from the extremities to the heart, reducing fatigue and improving performance. But while there is much anecdotal evidence about the benefits of wearing compression socks during competition, the biggest advantages seem to exist when they’re used for recovery. A study from Stellenbosch University in South Africa published in 2007 found “no statistically significant differences in maximal oxygen consumption, heart rate or minute ventilation” between runners using compression socks and the control group during running. But this study did find that runners had “a faster lactate recovery rate after exercise when wearing the compression socks.” The researchers also noted that “the possibility that compression socks may improve recovery after strenuous exercise seems promising and warrants further investigation.” Adding to the compression socks proponent’s voice is a recent independent study by Montana State University and announced at the American College of Sports Medicine Northeast Conference in early 2009 stating, “Zoot Sports’ CompressRx tights improve running economy.”

From these results, it appears compression socks may be effective for recovery or during long air flights where blood pools in the feet causing soreness and stiffness the next day. As there seem to be no negative results wearing compression socks during races, runners should experiment with them on longer training runs and decide if they want to use them during races.

One thing is certain, for compression socks to work they must use strong elastic fabrics that create significant compression on the legs, ankles and feet. Only with this powerful constriction is arterial pressure increased, forcing more blood back to the heart rather than having it pool in the feet and legs.
