Gear: Trail Running Packs
March 31, 2010By Gus Alexandropoulos
The perfect trail run usually includes a beautiful setting and challenging terrain in a secluded location far from the distractions of city life. Because of that remoteness, runners usually have to carry everything they need with them. With the right trail-running pack, you can carry all the water, food and clothing necessary for safe running on out-of- the way trails.
Choosing the right pack depends on the gear required for the run. In warm weather, water is the primary concern; so consider a smaller pack with a hydration system. During the shoulder seasons, when conditions might change quickly, a larger pack with more room for food, clothing and emergency gear is ideal.
Here are some top choices:
-
Raptor 6 - $100
Osprey
This slender hydration pack offers just enough space for the trail running necessities - water, food, and maybe a small wind shell and a first-aid kit. The pack's numerous organizer pockets keep items from jostling while the eternal stretch panel pocket is ideal for stuffing an ultralight shell. The ventilated BioStretch shoulder straps and a mesh waist belt stretch and conform to the body for optimal load control and minimal overheating.
-
Talon 11 - $110
Osprey
For longer trail runs where self-sufficiency is a greater concern, consider the Osprey Talon 11. With its increased volume and hydration-bladder-compatible construction, the Talon 11 is perfect for runners who need extra carrying capacity without the unnecessary weight and bulk of larger packs.
-
HPL #020
Nathan
This minimalist running vest includes a two-litre hydration bladder and enough extra space for other small necessities, such as energy bars, gels and a small wind shell. The ventilated shoulder and waist harness system is affixed to an elastic plate at the back of the pack, which acts as an active compression system. The system works and effectively minimizes pack shifting by and keeping its contents close to the back.
-
Flash - $63
Black Diamond
The featherweight Flash is an ideal choice for trail runners requiring extra gear without extra weight. While the Flash's weight savings are significant, the pack does not scrimp on functionality or comfort. Hydration compatibility, ventilated shoulder straps and organization pockets add to the packs versatility, while the lightweight fabric keeps the weight at 210g. Ideal for carrying extra food and clothing on longer trail runs.
-
XT Wings S Lab - $120
Salomon
This close-fitting pack provides trail runners with just enough space for critical items necessary on long runs. It's a great racing pack as well, with a built-in hydration system, an innovative external compression system for bulky clothing, an elasticized gel holster, two shoulder strap pockets and a removable zippered waist belt pocket. A ventilated back panel and shoulder straps ensure comfort during warm conditions, and an array of reflective tabs increase visibility and safety during duck, night or dawn.
