Emily Tallen wins Emilie Run
June 22, 2010Kingston, Ont.’s Emily Tallen zipped to a 16:32 victory at the Emilie Mondor Memorial 5K Race for Women on Sunday in Ottawa, with Mondor’s parents holding the finishing line tape. It was Tallen’s first victory at the race, having previously placed second twice and third once. Surging ahead just after the 1K mark, Tallen maintained her lead over a strong field. Mary Davies, a New Zealander now living in Ottawa, placed second in 17:07, with Brockville’s Paula Wilse placing third (and top master) in 17:18.
Race founder Ken Parker started the event to celebrate Mondor’s life and women’s running. Mondor, who represented Canada at the 2004 Olympics, died in a car crash along Rockcliffe Parkway in 2006 after a training session.
“I love what this race stands for and represents,” Tallen said. “It’s nice to honour Emilie.”
