Defar sets sights on 5K world record

Ethiopia’s Meseret Defar wants the reclaim the world record in the women’s 5,000 metres, announcing that she will chase the mark when she lines up for the DN Galan Diamond League meet in Sweden, on Aug. 6.
Defar’s current best is 14:12.88. The current world record is Tirunesh Dibaba’s 14:11.15.
“We have great expectations and hope that Defar’s World record attempt will create a magical atmosphere. There are a lot of Ethiopians in Sweden and we hope they will come to DN Galan in support of their heroine,” commented meeting director Rajne Söderberg on the IAAF website.
