World Juniors begin in Moncton with women’s 3000m thriller

The World Junior Track and Field Championships are underway in Moncton, and the opening ceremony provided some unique excitement for running fans: For the first time ever, organizers staged an event final in the middle of the ceremony, with the women’s 3000m race. Sherbrooke, Que.’s Caroline Pfister, featured recently in Canadian Running as our Honour Roll profile, was among the starters and finished in 22nd place, just beating her season best with a 9:47.55.
Kenya’s Mercy Cherono successfully defended her title, winning in the gold in 8:55:07 in a brilliant race that came down to a final sprint, with Emebet Anteneh of Ethiopia running a PB of 8:55.24 for silver and Layes Abdullayeva setting an Azerbaijan record of 8:55.33 for bronze.
