Levins, Harrison surprise winners at XC nationals
Heading into Saturday's Canadian Cross-Country Championships in Guelph, Ont., few people would have predicted that Cameron Levins and Kate Harrison would capture the men's and women's titles.
Heading into Saturday’s Canadian Cross-Country Championships in Guelph, Ont., few people would have predicted that Cameron Levins and Kate Harrison would capture the men’s and women’s titles.
But that’s exactly what happened.
Levins, of Comox Valley, BC, beat out the hometown favourite Reid Coolsaet, completing the 10-kilometre course in 29:26. Robin Watson of Guelph’s Speed River team was second in 29:49, with Coolsaet third in 30:05.
Harrison, who is from Toronto but competes for the West Virginia Mountaineers in the NCAA, cruised to victory in the women’s 7K race in 23:44. Dayna Pidhoresky was second in 24:05, while Kate Van Buskirk took bronze in 24:12.
Athletics Canada will use the results from Saturday’s race to select its teams for the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Spain.
