Peterborough man running for cancer

Inspired by Terry Fox, Scott Cannata of Peterborough, Ont., is planning to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

Scott Cannata loves his country so much, he’s planning to run from coast to coast starting in May.

Even his name sounds patriotic. But it’s about more than trying to be a great Canadian.

Cannata of Peterborough, Ont., is raising funds for cancer research, a disease that has touched him  personally.

His mother had surgery and went through radiation therapy for ovarian cancer and his paternal grandfather died from cancer five years ago.

Cannata, 24, is planning to run 8,778K — the equivalent of 209 marathons — from St. John’s, N.L. to Port Renfrew, B.C.

He’s calling his mission “Run to Live” and hopes to raise $2 for every Canadian.

It’s reminiscent of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope and Cannata said Fox’s run is part of his inspiration.

Cannata’s longest run was a 100-mile trail race in Haliburton, Ont., in 2009. He said he has been running between 130-160K per week in training.
