Marathon Quest: Finding your training groove

After deciding on a goal race and an appropriate training routine, it can be challenging to settle into the new routine. In my personal experience, I have changed my training routines several times. It’s important to be flexible and to take a positive approach when implementing the new routine.

A positive attitude towards my training routine puts me in a better mental state, building confidence in my ability to achieving my running goals. The first couple of weeks of a new routine are generally exciting and fun. However, as the weeks progress and training becomes more physically demanding, training often becomes monotonous as well as physically and mentally draining. I have learned that by listening to my body, not over exerting myself in workouts, and making sure I get optimal rest between hard workouts, I can recover quicker and settle well into my routine. Eventually, I find myself feeling relaxed in workouts and very comfortable with my training.

Maintaining a balanced diet — with proper nutritional supplements if needed — hydrating between workouts, and scheduling your daily events properly can help prevent injury and fatigue. It can also make settling into a routine much easier. I find that when I keep a consistent sleep schedule and eat healthy, I feel better and have a better attitude while training. I have also found it crucial to maintain a healthy balance between my athletic, professional and personal lives, in order to avoid overuse injuries and help achieve personal training and racing goals.
