Ruff Running

Going for a run with the dog is great way to combine running and Fido’s daily exercise. While most dogs don’t need any special equipment, there are a few items that can make the run more enjoyable for you and your four-legged companion.

Here are a four great items from some of the leading manufacturers of canine running gear.

  • Ruff Wear

    Bark'n Boots Grip Trex - $80

Unlike human running shoes, the Bark'n Boots Grip Trex offer no medial support or cushioning, but they deliver much-needed paw-protection on rocky trails during longer runs. Ruff Wear offers these boots in six sizes with a Velcro-style closure for a secure and comfortable fit. The Vibram rubber sole offers excellent traction and durability without sacrificing the necessary squirrel-chasing flexibility. And while some may argue that dogs don’t need shoes, anyone that’s ever taken their canine on frequent long runs knows better.

  • Ruff Wear

    Flat Out Leash - $36

While some dogs do just fine running with a traditional lead, most runners will quickly tire of having to hold the leash. The Flat Out Leash solves this dilemma by offering a traditional hand-held lead that easily transforms into a waist-worn system. Unlike hand held leashes, wearing the lead around the waist allows runners to maintain control over their dog without compromising good running form. At busy intersections, or when your dog requires more direction, simply use the sewn-in traffic-handle loop. Finally, Ruff Wear uses a secure collar clip that almost eliminates any accidental escapes.

  • Stunt Runner - $40

    Stunt Runner - $40

    Stunt Puppy

This waist-worn leash allows runners to maintain proper running form while ensuring man’s and woman’s best friend never wanders too far away. But unlike conventional non-stretch leashes, the Stunt Runner’s flexible connector minimizes any jarring if the dog zigs while the runner zags. For situations requiring more control, like busy parks or intersections, a short loop handle offers some gentle redirection.

  • Ruff Wear

    Track Jacket - $45
With its bright orange colour and reflective trim, the Track Jacket provides dogs with what may be life-saving visibility when running in low-light conditions. Ruff Wear uses a simple strap retention system, minimizing bulk while the sewn-in clip-on point allows for the addition of a small blinking light. It’s an important piece of gear when running at night or during hunting season.
