When you think of ridge running in Canada, Tumbler Ridge, B.C., may not be your first choice, but it’s an ideal destination. A hidden gem in northeastern B.C., Tumbler Ridge is a great example of how a small group of people created a running community. They worked hard to create a network of trails around Tumbler Ridge that showcase the natural features of the area.

There are kilometers of spectacular trails. Local industries, such as coal mining and forestry, have established road access for numerous ridges, peaks and waterfalls that would otherwise have been inaccessible. The northern climate means low tree lines, which, when combined with rounded peaks, results in kilometres of pristine ridges that are distinctly runnable. Add in the hard efforts of the Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society to discover, establish and mark many of these trails, and the result is possibly some of the best ridge running in Canada.

A great way to experience Tumbler Ridge, is through the Emperor’s Challenge race, held annually in the beginning of August. www.emperorschallenge.com. See also, Dr. Charles Helm’s book, Exploring Tumbler Ridge.
