Marathon Quest: Motivation keys

It can be hard to stay motivated when training for a marathon. Here are some principles I follow to stay motivated to train hard at any time.

I like to get the bulk of my running load out of the way in the morning. It’s cooler out, I feel fresh, and I don’t have, “I need to go for a run” in the back of my mind as I go about my day. I also find that the better I eat and hydrate, the better I feel during the run and I’m less likely to pack it in early. I’m more likely to run harder and longer if I’ve had proper sleep. Just by feeling physically good while I’m running, I’m much more motivated to run harder and put it the extra miles.

Injuries make it even harder to stay motivated, that’s why it’s very important to prevent and reduce the risk of injuries early on. Of course, injuries will happen to everyone. When it does, I cross-train and frequently remind myself of my goals to stay motivated. I remember the feeling of how much I love to train and be fit. I love to run because it gives me confidence, it gives me time to think and plan my day, most of all running gives me a release from everyday stress.

Some people like listening to music while running for extra motivation. Running with others can be motivating as well. We are all suffering in the same ways and can relate to one another. Working together with a friend or a club can help you push through and stay focussed.

During the race, it’s important to have a positive attitude and to be confident in your training and fitness. I like to think of all the work I’ve done to get to this point. I’ve done the training and I know I’m ready. I also think of all the sacrifices I’ve made, and others, to help me to get to where I am today. I think of how lucky I am to have all the support from family and coaches, but most of all, my girlfriend who has always been there for me through the good and the not-so-good times. I remind myself it’s not just me I’m running for but for the people who have worked hard to help me in my journey.

Whatever keeps you motivated, use those methods often, and always have a positive attitude.
