Banff-Jasper Relay raises funds for brain tumour research

More than 600 runners completed the Banff-Jasper Relay on Saturday to raise money for brain tumour research.

More than 600 runners completed the Banff-Jasper Relay on Saturday to both support the preservation of the national environment and to raise money for brain tumour research.

The original race, which went from Banff to Jasper in Alberta, was cancelled in 2000 over environmental concerns. But race organizer Blair Shunk brought it back to honour friend Garth Huck, a Calgary Roadrunner and running coach who died in 2004 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The new version of the race is broken up into two phases to lessen the environmental impact, according to an article in the Banff Crag and Canyon. Recreational runners can compete in a relay, each doing a different leg of the 250K run ranging in distance from 14 to 20K.

This year’s winning team was the 6060 Chuggers, who finished in 21:07:01. They were closely followed by the Old Dogs in 21:12:03, with the AMEC Avengers placing third in 21:39:35. For full results, visit the race website.
