London Marathon sets charity world record

The major marathon beat it's own total from 2011 with $82.5 million raised for charities.

The London Marathon outdid itself in 2012.

The marathon major broke a world record by raising 52.8 million pounds (82.56 million Canadian dollars) for various charities. The marathon actually broke it’s own record, raising one million pounds more than it had in 2011.

“The fact that this figure increased again for the sixth year in a row, despite the well publicised economic woes, shows just how committed our runners are to raising funds for good causes,” said Hugh Brasher, the marathon’s race director, in a statement released on Wednesday.

The London Marathon has now raised a total of 610.7 million pounds (955 million Canadian dollars) since the race began in 1981.
