    Barefoot running: Trailing ahead

    Many experienced trail runners use minimalist shoes in their races.

    Barefoot Running: A Tale of Two Races

    During two different types of races I was able to examine how many minimalist runners took part.  Would I see more minimalist runners during a road race or a technical trail race?  Despite my own expectations, my conclusions were surprising.

    Barefoot Running: Going Independent

    When I first visited my local independent running store, I felt uncomfortable as the only minimalist runner in the running club.  Nearly two years later, the store has made a commitment to stocking a range of shoes from a manufacturer that only makes minimalist shoes.  The growth of independent running stores who are making the change and educating their customers will the be cornerstone of the minimalist running community.

    Raising Runners

    My 5-year-old twins are registered for their first race… to say they are over the moon would be the understatement of the year (and that’s saying something since it’s only February)!

    Built to Run

    I’m not sure who I’m trying to impress by running fast… since no one else probably cares how fast I can run.  But everytime I do speed training I think about my junior high teacher (Miss Rushton) who told me I wasn’t built to run… so I run fast to prove her wrong… now that is some baggage!

    100% Fun Run

    Yikes… I never thought I’d see the day but over the last couple of weeks I started to consider running a chore. That was a wake-up call for me that I needed to take a step back and remember why I run..

    Stronger = Longer?

    I had always been into barefooting as a way to develop strong blister-free feet and generally strengthen the legs, but as I experimented with barefoot running, I began to think that there was more to running injury free than simply losing the shoes. Together with Amy Barnett, who handled strength and conditioning for Adrenaline Rush Athletics in Calgary we designed a study to test the role core strength played in maintaining a natural running gait and preventing breakdown and injury over distance.

    I should be sleeping. I’m in Boston, hours from the race. Yes, I’m excited. I didn’t expect to be excited though. After all, it’s a road race, but man, it’s shaping up to be one hell of a road race. I had been skeptical coming here and wasn’t looking forward to the pounding on the road. I’m a believer now!
