2012 Boston Marathon champ Wesley Korir was indeed the “surprise international elite runner” promised by the Yorkville 5K organizers, and he did not disappoint. Korir won, setting the course record in 14:05. This is the second straight Yorkville 5K victory for the world class marathoner. He won last year’s race in 14:09.
On the women’s side, Megan Brown won easily, beating Tarah Korir by a minute. Brown finished in 15:57, while Korir ran 16:57. Brown won the 2011 edition of the race in 15:51, where Korir also came in second. Third place went to Hamilton’s Stephanie Ryall in 17:49.

Thomas Omwenga, who won the Quebec City Marathon just two weeks prior to the race, placed second overall in 15:08. Third place went to Fred Karanja in 15:31.
Korir, who lives part-time in St. Clements, Ont., will next compete in the Chicago Marathon, where he hopes to win his second major marathon in a row. He placed second overall in Chicago in 2011, where he ran a PB in 2:06:15.
