There were 27,000 spots open for registration beginning at noon on Thursday and all were gone within an hour, the fastest the race has ever sold out. Last year it took seven hours for the Brooklyn Half to sell out.

“It’s really a New Yorkers race, while the Marathon is more of a global race,” NYRR spokesman Chris Weiller told the Daily News. “We’re excited. The popularity of the Airbnb Brooklyn Half continues to elevate.”

Registration for the race is on a first-come, first-served basis unlike the world’s most popular race, the New York City Marathon, or other major races where a lottery is used to determine entrance to the race.

The Brooklyn Half is put on by the New York Road Runners (NYRR), a non-profit running organization that puts on some of the largest road race events in New York City.

The Brooklyn Half is scheduled for May 21.
