Canadian Mo Ahmed’s lean at the line was enough to better Kevin Sullivan’s previous national record in the indoor 3,000m as the 25-year-old improved the mark by 0.06 seconds. Ahmed ran 7:40.11 at the Millrose Games in New York City on Saturday.
Sullivan, now retired, held the previous record since Feb. 9, 2007. Ahmed is the current Canadian record holder in the men’s 5,000m (outdoors) and gets to add the 3,000m indoor record to his resume after Saturday’s fine performance.
Ahmed’s training partner with the Bowerman Track Club in Oregon, Ryan Hill, won the race in a new meet record (7:38.82).
Fellow Canadian Cam Levins finished in tenth. Both Levins and Ahmed are eligible to compete for Canada at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Ore. in March.
