Canadian Running Magazine welcomes submissions from writers, photographers, athletes, coaches, sports doctors and dietitians. If you have a story idea, please query editor-in-chief Mihira Lakshman at email@example.com.
General Writing Style
Most of our articles are written in the third person and the active voice. Please read our magazine to get a sense of what we publish. We use Canadian grammar and spelling, and write all distances in kilometres. Race distances are written: 1500m, 3000m, 5K, 10K and half-marathon. Write general running distances like this: 3K from the finish, 12K down the road, 110K per week. Submissions should be sent by e-mail in a Word document, preferably in Times New Roman 12-point font. Include your name, address and a one- or two-sentence bio.
We’re always open to queries for new ideas, but we’re specifically looking for the best content for the following columns:
Features: Our features tell compelling stories about the Canadian running community. We also publish a limited number of well-written first person accounts. We don’t publish typical race reports. Features are between 1,200 and 2,500 words long.
News: Suggestions are welcome for running-related news items. These should be 150-250 words long and of interest to the general running community.
Profiles: These are intelligent, well-researched, 500-1000 word profiles of the personalities at the heart of Canadian running. We prefer prose pieces for this column but are occasionally open to interview format.
Training and Nutrition: Articles on training and nutrition are 500-1,000 words and should appeal to a range of running abilities, from novice to advanced. This column can either be written by an expert in the field of sports physiology, kinesiology or nutrition, or by a journalist citing authoritative sources.
Reviews: We occasionally accept product, book or movie reviews by freelancers, but please query us first.
Personal Essays: The back page of the magazine features a first-person essay delving into a runner’s humourous or life-altering experiences in the sport. These are 500-650 words.
