93-year-old conquers Mt. Washington race

A 93-year-old New Hampshire man has proved it’s never to late to make it to the top, completing a grueling uphill road race over the weekend.

George Etzweiler finished the Northeast Delta Dental Mt. Washington Road Race in Gorham, N.H., a 7.6 mile (about 12.2K) uphill race, reaching a height of 4,650 feet and a 12 per cent grade. It was Etzweiler’s ninth time completing the race, defending his existing title of the event’s oldest competitor.

Etzweiler finished the race in 3:15. Technically, he didn’t make the three-hour cutoff time, but race officials made sure he had a chance to finish the race.

Etzweiler notched several age group wins, including his third 90-and-up win. He last ran the race at age 91, when he clocked a 2:48.
