Ottawa’s Army Run sells out in record time

The fifth edition of the race will take place on September 23 with more than 18,000 participants.

Still more than two months away, Ottawa’s Canada Army Run has sold out in record time.

The fifth edition of the race will take place on September 23 with more than 18,000 participants running and walking to show their support for Canada’s women and men in uniform.

The Army Run consists of two races: the 5K run, which has attracted 9,500 participants, and the half-marathon, which has more than 8,500 registered.

The Army Run began in 2008 and set a Canadian record for registering more than 7,000 people in it’s inaugural run. Since then it has grown enormously, selling out last year with more than 16,000 participants. The race was expanded further this year to meet demand, but was capped at 18,000 for safety reasons.

“I don’t think anyone conceived five years ago just how popular this event would become or how fast it would grow,” said Run Director Major Simon Côté in the Army Run’s press release. “And, it’s not just runners who are signing up. It’s attracting people from all walks of life and all age groups who just want to be part of a very special, and often very emotional, event.”

Apart from the 5K and half-marathon there will also be a “Red Rally” on Friday, September 21 to start the weekend’s festivities. Military equipment will also be on display throughout the weekend for spectators and participants to view.

Charity fundraising will benefit the Soldier On and Military Families funds.
