Gabriela Stafford, Charles Philibert-Thiboutot defend Canadian 1,500m titles
The marquee distance event of the national championships went off on Sunday afternoon at Terry Fox Facility in Ottawa
Gabriela Stafford (4:12.41) and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot (3:45.32) defended their Canadian 1,500m titles on Sunday at the 2017 national championships in Ottawa.
Stafford, who has the IAAF World Championships qualifying standard, booked her ticket to London this August by virtue of a top-two placing. Sheila Reid, who finished second, also automatically qualifies and the national governing body will determine whether a third spot will be awarded to Nicole Sifuentes.
No Canadian man has the IAAF World Championships standard so Philibert-Thiboutot and Nate Brannen will pursue the standard. Athletes have until July 16 to run 3:36 or faster in the 1,500m in order to race for Canada at the IAAF World Championships in London Aug. 4-13.
