The age of the Canadian 1,500m finalists spans nearly two decades

Nate Brannen is the epitome of longevity on the track.

The 34-year-old is competing at, remarkably, his 18th Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa this weekend. He qualified for the men’s 1,500m final by finishing in the top-four in his preliminary heat on Saturday morning running 3:56.81. The Nike athlete was the only Canadian to make the Olympic 1,500m final in Rio last summer.

Meanwhile, the youngest of the 1,500m finalists are Mark Patton and Josh Kellier, both of who were born in 1997. Both Speed River Track Club athletes would have been in their very early years at the time that Brannen ran his first national track and field championships before 2000.

Things that didn’t exist before 2000 include social media, YouTube, iPhones, WiFi, NetFlix, Wikipedia, texting and much more showing how long Brannen has been a factor in Canadian, and global, athletics.

The other favourites in the event, namely Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, safely advanced through to the men’s 1,500m final at the Canadian Track and Field Championships. The final goes off July 9 at 12:50 p.m. EDT.
