Sage Watson breaks longstanding record at 2017 Canadian Championships

The 23-year-old set a new meet record at the 2017 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa

Sage Watson entered the record books at the Canadian Track and Field Championships running sub-55-seconds in the 400m hurdles.

The 2017 NCAA Division One champion ran 54.97 in the women’s 400m hurdles final on Sunday morning in Ottawa setting a new championship record. The second-fastest Canadian of all-time – her PB is 54.52 – at the distance has been threatening the Canadian record, which stands at 54.39. She will represent Canada at the 2017 IAAF World Championships this August in London.

Watson, 23, represented Canada at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the hurdles and finished fourth as part of the nation’s 4x400m relay squad. Noelle Montcalm, a 2016 Olympian herself, finished second in 56.15 at Terry Fox Facility in Ottawa on the final day of action at nationals. Montcalm automatically qualified for London 2017 by finishing in the top-two. Impressively, 17-year-old Xahria Santiago finished third racing in the senior-aged event.

Post-race interview

The previous meet record, 55.29, had stood since 1993. Rosey Edeh, the Canadian record holder, held the previous mark from the early nineties.
