VIDEO: ‘Mud corner’ at the Canadian Cross-Country Championships

Mud, mud and more mud.

Fort Henry in Kingston, Ont. had plenty on Saturday at the 2017 Canadian Cross-Country Championships. A hairpin turn towards the end of the 2K and 2.5K loops is arguably the toughest point on course to maneuver as the corner gets passed on every lap of every race, eight in total.

The normally-grassy area was a mud spectacle as runners wearing spikes, with pins as long as 15 mm, tore up the hairpin 180 degree turn. There wasn’t much to grab onto either as a single rope enclosed the cross-country course.
