Dispatches from a Kenyan running camp

Canada’s top marathoner Reid Coolsaet blogs about his experiences at a high altitude training camp in Iten, Kenya.

Take the World

I was going to write some sort of running-year-in-review for 2011 because I was pleased with how the year went but what I’m really excited about is 2012.

It makes no sense, no, it makes no sense, but I’ll take it free any time

I had to take a double look to believe it as it never even crossed my mind that I would have been up for such an award.

I was overwhelmed and I’m sure of that one

This year I had my best North American ranking ever, with a 3rd in the marathon (Ryan Hall and Meb Keflezighi are ahead of me).

The only one I know has come to take me away

38km became 39km and then I figured I might as well knock off a marathon

I run right back I’m sure

On January 1st I’m going back to Kenya and then directly to Luxembourg for a XC race on Feb 12. Thankfully I am a recipient of the Can Fund which will help offset the costs (flights, accommodation, physical therapy) associated with such a trip.

Caught in a wave

Want my scalp? Come and get it this Saturday at the Road 2 Hope 10km in Hamilton.

Tumbling Dice

My body tells me no But I won’t quit Cause I want more

The taper is fully on, which means I have to figure out how much to run each day this week so I don’t overdo it.

Like tall cans in the freezer when they get too cold

2 weeks to go until STWM. This was my last week over 200km. Today was my last long-run, 30km. Yesterday was my last banger of a workout, 5 X mile.

Let’s give ’em something to talk about

Last week was very eventful for me, solid workout, Toronto Waterfront press conference, 10K race, wedding up North and a long run.
