Supporting runners beyond race day

Do I climb out of my comfy bed, get dressed, drive to the grocery store to pick up oranges for my marathon runners or take the rest of the weekend off? Of course, I’m going to support my runners

It’s 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

I’m in pajamas about to watch a Netflix documentary when I get a text from a friend letting me know that a few of my marathon runners are training along the race route the next day. Everyone is starting at 7 a.m.

I have a decision to make. Do I climb out of my comfy bed, get dressed, drive to the grocery store to pick up oranges or take the rest of the weekend off? Of course, I’m going to support my runners. Even though Maritime Race Weekend is an international marathon, I know a lot of the local runners and have friendships with most of them. Their loyalty, continued support and registrations are not something I take for granted. Relationships never work if it’s a one way street. I deliver a world-class event, but they deserve more from me than that.

My alarm clock is set for 6 a.m. This will give me just enough time to brush my teeth, cut orange slices and create cheer signs.

Registration closes on Tuesday, Aug. 15. The next month will be 16-18 hour days, seven days a week finalizing logistics. Regardless of how busy I get, every Sunday I will be along the Maritime Race Weekend routes, popping-up in the most unexpected locations to encourage runners through their final weeks of training.
