The “W” word

weather

weather
A lot of race directors are superstitious and you will rarely hear us say the “W” word leading up to a race in fear it might jinx the event. What’s the forbidden word? Weather (of course).

Most won’t admit it but two weeks out we secretly and obsessively watch the weather forecast as it changes.

Weather, especially rain and wind, can be a serious buzz kill for the crowd. Though it’s sometimes fun to run a race in the rain, once done most seek the warmth of shelter and quickly leave. Bad weather is very high on the list of things race directors worry about. Why? Because we can’t predict or control it.

I’ve been fortunate that most of my events have had great weather, with exception of 2013, when I dealt with three race-day tropical storms.

For the last week, sunshine has been predicted for Police Chase. When I peaked at the Weather Network last night, there is a chance of some showers. This morning, back to mainly sunshine.

Any amount of rain means tents and tie-downs in case of wind, potential no-shows of volunteers, less spectators and lower participant turn-out. Regardless, the race must go on – so the van will be packed expecting the worse case scenario.
