Celebrate St. Paddy’s Day with an energizing green smoothie

If you're going to down an energizing green smoothie to start the day, you might as well do it on St. Patrick's Day.

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and for some reason the holiday has been associated with ridiculously green foods. It would be one thing if these foods were naturally green, but often it’s the unnatural things like green beer, muffins, cakes, and cookies that have become popular with this Irish holiday. This can be off-putting as green food normally means it’s moldy…

My Nana, my mom’s mom, was Irish. If my memory serves me well, I don’t recall eating copious amounts of green food when we’d visit. So, this green food phenomenon isn’t an everyday Irish thing, it’s just a St Patrick’s Day thing. To start off this week, I wanted to play into this green food trend before kicking into traditional Irish food at the end of the week (stay tuned!).

As training intensifies for runners going into their spring goal races, making sure to get in essential nutrients post-practice is key. When you’ve put your muscles through a workout or long run, the tissue will have broken down and will therefore be depleted of energy. I find having a smoothie filled with as many good things as possible: fruit, vegetables, chia seeds, flax seeds/oil, protein powders, etc.
