Growing Pains. I mean, really GROWING pains

Maybe I’ve been a wee bit unrealistic in my quest for middle-of-the-pack glory.

Day 5 of 130
Ks covered: 31
Ks to go: 1,071
General mood: Good to grating
Running highlight: 8K in 45:44
Equipment status: Stinky, but intact
Body status: One cut due to chafing, sore-ish knee

Crazy Haruki mustn’t have kids. The first day of my new life as a “serious runner” and I spend it in the E.R with my one year old. She’s fine, but my new running regimen is already on life-support.

Maybe I’ve been a wee bit unrealistic in my quest for middle-of-the-pack glory. Is 58K a week unattainable with two small kids and a slow cooker to take care of? My knee is complaining, my back is bleeding from mystery-chafe and I’d already be sick of my 5th running mix by now if it weren’t for the overbearing shouts from my feet with every step; “why-did-you-have-to-go-public-with-this?’

Screw you, feet. When I get back, you’re going to the back of the closet next to my skinny jeans.

BUT – and it’s all about the butt, isn’t it? – here’s the good stuff: I’ve covered 31K in five days (with another eight to 10 scheduled for this afternoon), including one 8K in 45:44. That, my friends, sure puts 80-year-old Maurice Tarrant’s lousy 46:22 8K-world-record in its place. I mean, the lazy bugger has had 47 years’ more practice and still can’t beat me…Amateur.

So, it looks like I’m in it to win it …sort of. Here’s my plan:

– Run minimum five, maximum six days a week.
– Include at least one tempo and one long run per week
– Weight training twice a week
– In about a month I’ll start doing hills.

What do you think? Am I on the right track?
