I’m a race director, I’ve finally found my dream job

Michelle_Kempton_dream_job

As a race director, I’m lucky to have a job where I don’t count the hours until the weekend. In fact, it feels like there aren’t enough hours in day. I work at least 60 hours a week including a lot of weekends– but it doesn’t feel like it.

I’m the first to admit that I have a very short attention span and am easily bored. Organizing a marathon takes me twelve months and involves hundreds of tasks. It makes every day different and challenging in its own way.

The best part is that there aren’t a lot of meetings and the ones I do have are productive. When I worked in the corporate world, drawn-out weekly status meetings tortured me. Everyone took a turn talking about their part of the project. I day-dreamed and doodled until it was my turn to speak. Now, my meetings fly by and usually are in a coffee shop instead of a boardroom.

Today, I had an 8:30 a.m. meeting with another event organizer. There was no shortage of things for us to discuss and before we knew it, four and half hours had passed. The passion of people in the running industry significantly contributes to how much I enjoy what I do. It gives me the energy and support to forge ahead. From the runners to the volunteers and my peers, I’m surrounded by like-minded people with an enthusiasm like I’ve never experienced before.

When I lay down in bed to go to sleep, it feels like I’ve had an awesome day. When I get up, I’m full of ideas, energy and can’t wait to get to work. This hasn’t always been the way I felt about a job and this is the first career where I expect that I’ll still enjoy it ten years from now.
