Learning from the best: Through networking with other directors, I’m improving my own race

When Michelle got the chance to network with other race directors, she got ideas on how to better improve her own race.

Kempton July 4

One of the most important ways to ensure that I keep a high quality for Maritime Race Weekend is to stay abreast of industry trends and share best practices with other race directors. I’ve volunteered with events across North America and learned something helpful from each. Then in June, I had the privilege of volunteering with the Canada Running Series team for the inaugural Waterfront 10K.

After this experience, I understand why Canada Running Series races are considered to be the best organized ones in Canada. From enthusiastic and committed staff, to strong communication, to the detailed logistics, they have left no stone unturned.

Even though I’ve been a race director for five years, I still learned a lot from their team. That included ideas surrounding race kit pick-up, baggage check, finish line set-up and the newest software. The highlight of my experience with CRS was being given security clearance to enter their command center, which has essential race day team leads in one room.

During the race, I observed them in awe. From starting the race, to tracking the crowd’s progress, to deploying medical and re-opening roads after the last runner crossed the finish line, I saw it all.

Maritime Race Weekend has never had a command center. Up to now, our core team has been strategically placed around the race site and along the route. We communicate by radio and cell phone. It has worked, but having the team together in a quiet central location would work better. As a result, we’ll have a command center this year. I’m going to be using some new technology too.

I’m indebted to Charlotte Brookes for allowing me to shadow her on race week and the amazing CRS team for answering my countless questions. Hopefully, one day I can return the favour.
