The second morning on the track at the Pan Am Games was less exiting than the kickoff a day earlier, seeing disappointing performances by Canada’s 800m runners.

The strong takeaway from the morning was an impressive start to the two-day decathlon by Damian Warner, a favourite to win the event.

The 25-year-old Commonwealth Games champion ran 10.28 in the 100m and leaped 7.68m in the long jump, totalling 2008 points between the two morning events, placing him a healthy 62 point ahead of Felipe Dos Santos of Brazil.

Anthony Romaniw and Brandon McBride both failed to advance to the finals of the men’s 800m. Romaniw pulled up before the finish, walking across the line, while McBride faded in the final straight to fifth in his heat and a 1:49.65 finish, the first man out of the finals. Neither competed at the national championships at the beginning of July.

The men’s 400m hurdle heats also saw both Canadians fail to qualify. Gregory MacNeill and Tait Nystuen both missed the finals, running to 52.31 and 52.98, in their first and third heats, respectively.

The evening session is likely to be a full house, being headlined by semifinal and finals in the men’s and women’s 100m dash. The women’s 800m final, featuring Melissa Bishop and Jessica Smith, will also run. The women’s 400m hurdle finals is scheduled. Sarah Wells will race.

The evening session begins at 6:05 p.m. EDT with the men’s long jump. The first event on the track is the women’s 100m semifinal at 6:25.
