Running down Yonge Street

StintzMedalsFor many, the sign of spring is green grass, the sound of the birds and the leaves starting to bud on the trees. For runners, the sign of spring is the Toronto Yonge Street 10K. The run down Yonge is an institution in our City. The route down Yonge was first established 26 years ago and had sponsors from Cadet Cleaners, to Eaton’s to Sporting Life. The race has always included a charitable component, so people would run and raise money for their charities of choice. The charities included the YMCA, the White Ribbon Campaign and Camp Oochigeas,  a camp for kids with cancer.

I have run the race eight times over the past 15 years. I have run with my mother-in-law, my friends, my neighbours and strangers who become neighbours for the hour or so that it takes to complete the race. My time has gotten better since my first run several years ago. I think I had a personal best last year; however, my record time may have been a result of the cooler temperature this time last year. With any luck the weather will stay nice for the thousands of runners who are trying for a personal best in their first big race of the running season.

Last year there were 7,000 runners and this year even more runners are expected. It is so incredible to hear the steps of the runners and be part of the sea of people who come out early Sunday morning. The energy of the runners, combined with the enthusiasm of the volunteers, is an example of a great City event that pulls people together no matter where they live. My favourite section of the run is between Davisville and St. Clair. It’s the only part of the race that runs uphill. Once you clear St. Clair it is downhill all the way to Fort York. It’s a great way to start a Sunday, get some exercise and donate to good causes.

If you happen to miss the race but still want to try a 10K down Yonge there will be another opportunity. Sporting Life offers its 10K down Yonge on May 11th. The Sporting Life race is dedicated to raising money for Camp Oochigeas and, if you raise $100, your entry fee is waived. I will be at the starting line again in May.

Tie up your shoes and I’ll see you running down Yonge.
