VIDEO: Tropical green smoothie recipe

It's hot. When summer heat is bogging you down, there's perhaps no better way to replenish your stores than by drinking smoothies.

For the last three years, I’ve been lucky enough to come to Kelowna for a training camp and freeload off of two of my favourite people for a week or two. Not only can I train with them both, hang out with their awesome kids, and bask in the Okanagan sun but my friend Em and I also get to collaborate efforts and cook up a storm. It becomes a 50/50 training and cooking camp.

It can get really hot in Kelowna, where going for an easy run at 7 a.m. leaves you drenched in sweat. We all drink so much water I sometimes wonder if getting an IV would be more efficient. Along with staying hydrated, we try to go for fresh ingredients and colder meals, except for the nights when the barbecue is calling.

Smoothies have been a staple in our daily menu at this year’s training camp. We throw in any frozen fruit we can find, add in the green ice cubes made by Em, then bulk it up with yogurt, protein powder and some kind of liquid. Opting for a sports drink helps get in some essential electrolytes to keep our systems in balanced. Not only are these smoothies chock a block full with nutrients, they’re also the perfect refreshment for after a workout.
