A look at the new Bolyston RunBase

Three of the top names in the Boston Marathon have come together to open a new store and meet-up space for runners in the Boston area.

Marathons Sports, the BAA and Adidas, the Thursday before Marathon Monday, opened the new RunBase only a few hundred metres west of the iconic finish line Marathon Sports storefront on Boylston Street. Beyond being a store (and one of the few places to pick up one of the iconic marathon jackets), the space is filled with memorabilia from the race, including the 2013 champions medal donated by winner Lelisa Desisa to the city in the wake of the bombings.

The shop also is home to old versions of the race jacket, a gold wreath given to winners and a large wooden contour map of the course explaining different points along the course and their elevation.

Kevin Dillon, the general manager of Marathon Sports Running Company, describes the new store as a concept store that grew from a relationships between the company and the BAA that had collaborated in 2014 to raise money for the One Fund.

So far, race competitors seem interested. The store has been packed since opening Thursday and Dillon jokes he has no idea how many race jackets they’ve sold, but notes as usual men’s mediums and smalls are pretty well sold out.

All the memorabilia in the store was selected and put together by the BAA, but Dillion is happy to show it off.

“Rather than putting it into a museum where people walk around and kind of fall asleep putting it into a run store where it’s kind of a base that people can actually come look at is great,” says Dillion. We also have a shower and change rooms here so people can come in, get in their gear, go off for their run, come back in, shower and go back about their day. We really are a run base, a home for anybody in Boston.”

The wall beside the cash in the store sports and interactive touchscreen, where guests can lookup all the results of runners who have competed in the marathon since the BAA started keeping records.
