Best for runners seeking a versatile trainer than can perform at any pace
Boston 12

Adidas Boston 12

An everyday shoe that can pick up the pace when you need it

The perfect do-it-all trainer from Adidas comes in the form of the Adizero Boston 12 shoe. Designed for speed and agility, they have an ultralight midsole with Adidas’ Lighstrike foam combined with a comfortable, yet snug, upper for a secure fit. This shoe can handle your daily miles, but it can easily pick up the pace, too. This makes it a great choice for runs at a variety of paces.

Maybe the best feature is the grippy Continental outsole found in most Adidas models. This performs great in wet or dry conditions and the Boston 12 has more outsole coverage than some of the racing models in the Adidas lineup.

Best for runners who want lower-profile and lightweight speed shoe

The brand with three striped delivers all out speed with the Adios 9.

It has all the bells and whistles of the premium marathon shoes in a lighter, striped-down, 6.2-oz. package. The full-length Lightstrike Pro midsole gives a feeling of bouncing you forward and has some pop when combined with a small stiffening element in the midsole.

The shoe has only 27 mm of stack height, which is ideal for speedwork and shorter races up to the half-marathon. You can feel good about this purchase too, knowing it’s light on your wallet and good for the planet, using 20 per cent recycled materials. If you’re looking to go fast, this is the shoe we’d recommend.

Best for trail runners that want comfort and stability in their everyday shoe

The Terrex Agravic 3 delivers a fast shoe for trail runners. The Lightstrike 2.0 foam fin the midsole includes 31 mm of stack in the heel, with an 8-mm drop. The grip comes from a 4-mm lugged outsole and Continental® Rubber to give you confidence with footing on loose and slippery terrain. There’s also TPU in the midsole for extra protection and propulsion.

The mesh upper is comfortable on foot and the TPU overlay provides some mild stability. The Terrex Agravic comes complete with a gusseted tongue and molded sock liner. This shoe feels good on foot and manages to stay nimble without sacrificing grip or protection.

Best for runners who like a softer ride
Adidas Supernova Rise 2

Adidas Supernova Rise 2

Fun daily trainer with a little more bounce than your average shoe

The Supernova Rise got a revamp with this second version, which is softer and more propulsive. It might not be the lightest shoe on this list, coming in at 9.7 oz. in a men’s size 9, but the Dreamstrike+ midsole is a superfoam specifically tuned for comfort. It feels well cushioned, and support rods in this model help guide you through your stride. There’s 36 mm of foam in the heel and 26 mm in the forefoot, striking a good balance between cushioning and ground feel.

The engineered Sandwich mesh upper is breathable, making it a good option for the warm summer months. (We’re not exactly sure what a Sandwich upper is, but it feels great, and the Supernova Rise 2 is even recognized by the American Podiatric Medical Association for promoting good foot health.)

Best stylish shoe for running or walking

This one’s a classic. The first version of the Ultraboost came out in 2015, and Adidas has been continuing to add new foams and keep the style relevant ever since. The Ultraboost lineup is well known for its classic look and the 5x brings in Lightboost foam to give it 10 per cent lighter cushioning, to make it the lighted edition yet.

Their Primeknit upper fits seamlessly on foot, and, staying true to the Ultraboost style, the pronounced molded external heel keeps you feeling locked in. There’s an integrated torsion system and midfoot support for a smoother ride that will work well for neutral and stability runners. And of course, the Ultraboost 5x has full coverage of Continental rubber for grip in wet and dry conditions.
