The best shoes and apparel to stay warm and dry this winter
There's no such thing as bad running weather if you dress for the conditions

Winter running requires footwear and clothing that not only provide warmth, but shield you from snow, sleet and wind. And if that was not a sufficiently challenging list of requirements, your kit must also allow excess perspiration to escape, so you remain dry and comfortable. We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite shoes and apparel for winter running.

Salomon Speedcross 6 Gore-Tex
A proven trail-running shoe with solid cushioning, traction and weather protection
This shoe has been in Salomon’s line-up for six iterations, and the current Gore-Tex version offers exceptional cushioning and traction, as well as being completely waterproof while still maintaining breathability. This construction ensures your feet will stay warm and dry, whether you are running on snow-covered trails or in slushy urban environments. Salomon has also updated the Speedcross’s outsole with larger lugs, which provide better mud and snow clearance while retaining the traction runners need in snow or on sloppy, wet trails. This is a time-tested shoe that is perfect for winter running.

Craft ADV Hybrid Weather Glove
A two-in-one glove
With its windproof and waterproof cover and cosy polyester glove, the ADV Hybrid Weather Glove is ideal for changing weather conditions. The glove’s functional design provides versatile warmth without compromising the dexterity required when handling a phone, keys and other small essentials. In milder weather, simply use the glove in its uncovered form, but if the wind picks up or the temps start dropping, unfurl the weatherproof cover and continue comfortably on your run.

Salomon Bonatti Trail Jacket
A waterproof and breathable jacket
Constructed with a waterproof/breathable Pertex fabric, the Bonatti Trail Jacket from Salomon delivers the weather protection runners need when training in cold or wet conditions. Unlike some waterproof/breathable jackets, the Bonatti Trail provides exceptional freedom of movement, thanks to the Pertex fabric’s built-in stretch. While the jacket has a number of useful features (effective hood, elastic cuffs), the most interesting would have to be the carefully increased volume in the front and back, which allows you to wear a 12L Salomon hydration pack under the jacket. By keeping the hydration pack closer to the body and shielded from the elements, runners can postpone the dreaded frozen-fluid syndrome most of us have experienced during longer cold-weather runs. It’s a smart design that highlights Salomon’s commitment to all-weather running.

Craft ADV SubZ Jacket 3
A winter running jacket with additional core insulation
The ideal winter running jacket should provide wind protection for your core while being sufficiently breathable to prevent overheating. It seems that Craft agrees with this assessment, which may explain the ADV SubZ Jacket 3’s exceptional cold-weather performance.
Craft has employed a unique wind-resistant Ventair front panel that’s backed with a thin layer of insulation. This combination does a great job of shrugging off cold blasts of wind and adds extra low-bulk warmth to your core. The rest of the jacket (sleeves and back) features a stretchy recycled-polyester jersey that allows for excellent ventilation without inhibiting movement. Finally, Craft has spec’d extended wrist cuffs with thumb holes for additional warmth for your hands. It’s a smart design that can be used in lieu of gloves in less extreme conditions, or as a low-bulk liner inside mitts during really cold weather.
This is a well-constructed cold-weather running jacket that will keep you warm without overheating, all winter long.

Brooks High Point Waterproof Jacket
A compact, waterproof/breathable jacket
Designed to offer protection from rain, wind, and snow, the High Point Waterproof Jacket is also compact enough to easily fit in a pocket, ready for deployment when the weather deteriorates. Brooks has included a number of small, well-thought-out details that elevate this jacket’s functionality, such as multiple chest and back vents, which allow for excess heat and perspiration to escape easily escape. This ensures you remain dry and warm inside. In the hood, Brooks has added a unique visor design that accommodates a headlamp for those pre-dawn or post-dusk training sessions. Finally, the jacket is constructed with a bit more volume to fit over a running vest, ensuring the vest and its contents remain protected from the elements.

Brooks Ghost 16 GTX Road Running Shoes
A waterproof daily trainer
If you want a well-cushioned daily training shoe with additional water and snow protection, check out the Ghost 16 GTX. Built with a Gore-Tex liner, the shoe is completely waterproof, yet breathable. The result is that your feet stay warm and dry, whether you are running on snow-covered sidewalks or dodging puddles. Brooks has spec’d a new nitrogen-infused DNA v3 midsole, which delivers soft and consistent cushioning, making it ideal for daily training. Runners will also appreciate Brooks’s segmented crash pads, which encourage a smooth heel-to-toe transition and create a smoother ride. This shoe is a solid choice for regular training in cold or wet conditions.

Brooks Fusion Midweight Glove 2.0
A versatile glove for less extreme winter conditions
If you happen to be one of those runners lucky enough to live in less northern climes, the Fusion Midweight Glove 2.0 might be perfect. Constructed with a warm synthetic fabric, the gloves deliver the perfect combination of warmth, wind resistance and breathability. As with most winter running gloves, these feature touchscreen-compatible points, a soft nose-wipe panel and reflective highlights. While perhaps not ideal for sub-Arctic conditions, they are perfect for moderate winter weather.

Smartwool Active Fleece Wind Tight
Warm running tights for cold and windy weather
Don’t let the cold weather stop you from running this winter–get a pair of Smartwool’s Active Fleece Wind Tights. Like other garments in the Active Fleece line, these tights feature a sophisticated four-way stretch knit fabric with a brushed merino interior for comfort and warmth and a recycled synthetic exterior for protection from the elements. On the front, however, Smartwool also adds a windproof panel that delivers additional protection in breezy conditions. The result is exceptional weather protection without compromising breathability. To finish off this highly functional part of running tights, Smartwool includes a zippered rear pocket as well as a small side drop-in pocket.
