In early April, July track competitions may seem far out but before you know it, Canada’s best will be gearing up and getting set to race each other at the Canadian Track and Field Championships. It has just been announced this week that the meet will be held in Ottawa this year as part of the country’s 150th birthday celebrations.

The event will run from July 3 to July 9. Top track athletes who will be racing this year include Andre De Grasse, Melissa Bishop, Damian Warner, Derek Drouin, Alister McQueen and Brent Lakatos.

“It has been awhile since Ottawa has hosted the national championships,” said Melissa Bishop to Athletics Canada recently. “I was actually a junior helping the Ottawa Lions with the meet the last time it was in Ottawa. To have it in the nation’s capital for Canada’s 150th is special.”

The 800m track star and one of Canada’s most talented middle-distance runners expects that because of the location of the meet this year, she will likely be able to see fans from her hometown in the stands.

Last year, the championships took place in Edmonton ahead of Rio with runners’ performances influencing the roster of athletes that represented Canada in Brazil.

If you’re a Canadian track fan looking to catch the action in person, tickets are on sale starting at $15 now.
