Winter running with your dog

dog1As humans, we change how we run in the winter—we put on more layers, we watch our footing more carefully and we make sure we can be seen when darkness falls earlier. If you run with your dog, don’t forget that it is winter for them as well. Here are some tips for winter running with your dog.

 1) Keep them safe.

Fit your dog with some reflective gear when you head out the door in the dark. A reflective leash, collar or jacket will do the trick.

 2) Keep them warm enough.

Certain breeds of dogs are designed to withstand could temperatures, with a thick layer of fur to keep them warm. If you have a breed that has hair instead of fur, you may want to consider investing in a doggie running jacket for your companion.

3) Keep them hydrated.

If you need a drink, chances are they do too.

A route that has been salted is great for you, as it minimizes wipeouts, but may not be so great for your canine friend. The salt used to melt ice on sidewalks can aggravate the pads on their feet, causing them to crack and bleed. If you want to run with your pet on salted roads, consider getting a pair of doggie slip-ons. Yes, they might look a tad ridiculous, but they are worth it to keep you both safe.

5) Give them a bit more leash.

Chances are, your dog knows that it doesn’t like the salted sidewalk. Give them enough leash length to allow them to run on the snow covered area beside.

6) Keep them fuelled.

Even if you’re popping a carbohydrate aid on a run, your pet doesn’t need one. The canine system is different from the human one and your pet won’t need to refuel the way you do. But, if you are running with your pet more than usual, make sure you are upping the amount that you feed them to prevent accidental weight loss.

 7) Keep age in mind.

Puppies less than eight weeks old should not be exposed to the cold for extended periods of time.

If your dog is shivering, lifting up its paws or reluctant to continue, listen to them like you would if you’re human running companion told you that they couldn’t feel their fingers.

9) Warm them up after.

Make sure your pet has a warm spot indoors to reheat after a cold run.

 10) Let them motivate you.

Most of the time, your pet is going to be more pumped at the prospect of a winter run than you are. Try to adopt some of their enthusiasm and enjoy the snowy playground.
