How to make the perfect mason jar salad

Are you bored of packing the same old sandwich to take to work or school everyday? Do you like food that looks good and then tastes good? Are you trying to eat healthfully?

If you answered yes to any of the three prior questions, we think you should give making a mason jar salad a whirl. These little gems are easy to make ahead and can be individualized to suit your taste. You knew you kept all those old mason jars for a reason!

Layer #1 (the very bottom of your jar): Dressing

Pour in as much dressing as suits your personal preference. If you’d like some homemade dressing inspiration, check out our article here.

Layer #2: Chopped vegetables

This is the first layer that will shield the rest of your salad from getting soggy. Opt for harder vegetables, like chopped carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers and beets.

Layer #3: Grains or beans

A handful of chickpeas or black beans can add vegetarian protein to your salad. Or you can sprinkle in cooked quinoa, brown rice or a bit of pasta (or, you can do both, totally up to you!).

Layer #4: Nuts and seedssalad-in-a-jar-mason-vegan 39

Toss in a quarter cup of slivered almonds, pumpkin seeds or walnuts for a boost of omegas and healthy fat.

Layer #5: Proteins and cheese

A bit of grilled chicken or even sliced deli meat can add a protein boost. For vegetarians, firm cubed tofu or hard-boiled eggs are options. Cheese options are practically endless!

Layer #6: Softer produce

If you want to add avocado, tomatoes, strawberries or blueberries or raisins, this is the layer to do it.

Layer #7: Greens

Spinach, kale, romaine, whatever lettuce suits your mood can make up the final layer. Your salad greens will stay crisp, as they have significant barrier between them and the dressing at the bottom of the jar.

To enjoy, simply shake the jar and pour the salad into a bowl. Checkout the blog, The Kitchn, for tons of mason jar salad recipe inspiration.
