Should I be taking probiotics?

kimchiProbiotics are healthy gut bacteria. They are naturally occurring in all fermented foods, such as kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha. And, thanks to savvy marketing by yogurt companies, we all know that yogurt is a source. You can also take probiotic pills to supplement your dietary intake. If you find that you frequently fall victim to illness while training, or suffer from a tricky stomach, here are some of the reasons that you may want to consider experimenting with probiotics.

Immune system support

We run because it’s good for us, but sometimes training hard can leave our immune systems overworked. For any runner who has had the awful experience of coming down with a cough or a cold just weeks before a big race, this is likely a sign you’ve been training hard. Probiotics increase healthy gut bacteria to help the immune system protect against infections.

Improved digestion and absorption of nutrients

RunnersTrotsWhen your digestive system is functioning at its best, you’ll get the most out of your nutrition. This is particularly important for runners that may be supplementing for any deficiencies, like iron or vitamin B12, and want to absorb as much as possible.

Less likely to fall victim to runner’s trots

Intestinal discomfort or diarrhea ruins any run and can be catastrophic during a race. Many people who suffer from irritable bowel symptoms (similar to those of runner’s trots) find probiotics extremely useful in mitigating symptoms.
