Study links cherry juice to a better sleep

Feeling tired even after a night’s sleep?

If the chamomile tea and melatonin pills aren’t really working, there’s a new sleep aid on the block for you to try out.

Research presented at the Experimental Biology 2014 meeting says that drinking cherry juice twice a day will help fussy sleepers get extra time dozing instead of tossing and turning.

This information was gleaned from a study at Louisiana State University where a group looked at the effects of cherry juice on insomniacs. The sleep deprived group was given cherry juice twice a day for two weeks. To compare the results, for the following two weeks they were given a placebo.  By drinking the cherry juice, it was found that they got on average, an extra 84 minutes of sleep per night.

So what’s the deal with cherry juice? The drink is a natural source of the sleep-wake cycle hormone melatonin as well as tryptophan (the ingredient that makes your feel sleepy after a turkey dinner). To add to that, cherry juice also has an enzyme that decreases the breakdown of tryptophan.

Give it a try! If anything, it’ll prevent the dangers of not sleeping.
