The swap: Sugary drinks for nature’s thirst quenchers

natural juice

As the weather heats up, most of us always have an ice cold beverage at arm’s length. Sometimes water doesn’t cut it. Instead of reaching for a sugar-loaded drink, try a natural one instead.

Coconut water

There are many rumoured health benefits of coconut water. Some claim them to be false, some really swear by this drink. One thing that’s for sure: if it tastes good while being natural, why wouldn’t you swap it in in place of drinks like pop and artificially flavoured “fruit” juices? Add a twist by making it into coconut water lemonade in the recipe linked above.

Home made iced tea

Why buy bottled iced tea when a) you don’t know what’s in it and b) it costs you more money-wise and in terms of health? Making iced tea is a matter of having tea bags in stock, plenty of lemon and as much or as little sugar as you want. Make it a little stronger to keep the flavour after dumping in all that ice. Need a recipe? Jazz things up with this raspberry iced tea.

Fruit-infused water

We love the idea behind this. If water is boring or you want a little added taste, you have the flavour of fresh fruit juices. You also get the flavour without all the sugary additives of a fruit punch or powdered drink. Our favourite is the grapefruit and rosemary combo.

This Kool-Aid alternative

Goodbye Kool-Aid (and sugar-coated teeth), hello hibiscus and stevia! This is a great alternative to Kool-Aid but you’ll feel better hydrating yourself with natural good-for-you products instead. Great for kids or to serve as an alcohol-free option at summer patio party.
