2017 Boston Marathon champ Geoffrey Kirui wins IAAF World Championship marathon
The Kenyan continues his impressive year winning in a dramatic fashion. Canada's Eric Gillis has a tough day in London
Geoffrey Kirui, who won the Boston Marathon in April, seemed to get dropped by Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola just past the halfway point of the race. But the 24-year-old Kirui closed a 40-metre gap by 30K and then delivered the knockout punch, dropping Tola en route to an impressive victory in 2:08:27.

The Ethiopian, who entered with the fastest PB in the field, held on for second in 2:09:49. Closing hard was Tanzanian Alphonse Simbu, who rounded out the podium, just barely missing silver, finishing two seconds behind Tola in a spirited second half.

Eric Gillis struggles (click for full story)
It was a tough day for Canada, as Eric Gillis struggled with GI issues and did not finish.
He revealed on Twitter that he’d been suffering from an illness in the week leading up to the race. The 36-year-old finished 10th last year at the Rio Olympics, in one of the most impressive international performances by a Canadian in years.
This could have been Gillis’s last major marathon, as he will soon take over as coach of the St. FX University track and cross-country team in his hometown of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. It would end one of the most consistent careers in Canadian distance running. Gillis is a three-time Olympian and has delivered multiple world class times.
Disappointed I wasn't able to show my fitness today. Thursday came down with Norwalk, could have used few more days recovery, I'm ok now 🙂

The other Canadian in the field, Thomas Toth, started in last place. The inexperienced marathoner moved up the field carefully, eventually finishing in 53rd in 2:23:47. This was just his second-ever attempt at the distance.
