The tenth-place finisher at the 2016 Olympics did not finish the men’s marathon at the IAAF World Championships.

Eric Gillis, one of two Canadians in the marathon along with Thomas Toth, dropped out around 35K of Sunday morning’s 42K in London. As reported by Lori Ewing, Gillis had “some GI issues” and was “virtually running on empty.”

After the race, Gillis posted on Twitter that he has been suffering from Norwalk. He says he is disappointed that he couldn’t show his fitness at the world championships. The 37-year-old went through the halfway point in 33rd place clocking 1:06:10. His last split came at 30K at 1:35:24, 32nd place at the time.

According to Web MD, Noroviruses “cause gastroenteritis, food infection, food poisoning, and acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis.” The virus typically spreads through “contaminated water and foods, although they can also pass from person to person.”

Geoffrey Kirui, the winner of the 2017 Boston Marathon, won the IAAF World Championships men’s marathon in 2:08:27. Toth, making his senior international debut, was the lone Canadian finisher in 2:23:47, good for 54th place overall in just his second-ever marathon.
