Melissa Bishop glides through semi-finals, through to next round

Melissa Bishop is through to the next round.

Going into this year’s World Championships in London, Bishop was the favourite for many Canadian fans. The 800m track athlete stepped onto the track today to compete in the semi-finals of the event.

In the semi-final round, runners compete in three heats with the first two runners of each automatically advancing to the finals. Then, the next two fastest runners overall go through to also compete in the last round which is scheduled for the afternoon session of Aug. 13 – the final day of the World Championships.

In her race today, Bishop competed in the first heat and easily earned herself that spot for the big race. She got herself into second place after American Ajee Wilson to clock a 1:59.56. Wilson ran through to the finish in 1:59.21.

Also with Bishop on the track on the closing day of the championships will be the three athletes who beat her to the podium last year at the Olympics in Rio: Margaret Wambui, Francine Niyonsaba and the controversial Caster Semenya who won gold.

Two years ago at the World Championships in Beijing, Bishop ran a heck of a race bringing home a silver medal to Canada.
