New York City Marathon participants at the 29K mark were stopped temporarily to allow for New York City Fire Department vehicles and personnel to cross the race route.

“Runners approaching mile 18, due to a temporary obstruction on the course, please follow personnel instructions and be prepared to pause,” the NYRR said in an email sent to New York City Marathon participants.

The fire was not related to the marathon, race officials said from the NYRR Media Centre adjacent to the New York City Marathon finish line. The Fire Department needed to cross First Avenue, one of the busiest major thoroughfares in Manhattan.

This is a developing story and will be updated when new information becomes available.

UPDATE: The stoppage appears not to have been significant as the NYRR haven’t made any additional statements.
