Mike Wardian’s leg-aching number of races so far in 2017

The American is approaching 50 races on the year with the New York City Marathon next on his to-do list

American Michael Wardian is in New York City for another marathon, his 17th, possibly 18th, of 2017, he says, as the avid racer approaches 50 races for the calendar year.

The 43-year-old notably set a world record for the World Marathon Challenge early in the year running seven marathons in seven days on seven continents, averaging 2:45 for them all. He then attempted the Barkley, and dropped out on loop one, before a mountain marathon-ultramarathon double, with six hours rest, that included the Pikes Peak Marathon and the Leadville 100.

More recently, the Arlington County, Va. resident won the Fenway Park Marathon in Boston, raced the Gobi Ultra in China and did the Baltimore Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon on back-to-back days on Oct. 21-22. Wardian says more than half of his 43 races in 2017 have been marathon distance or longer including Gobi, which is 400K.
