The Illegal: New Lawrence Hill book focuses on running

One of Canada’s most prized authors, Lawrence Hill is out with a new book this fall that follows the life of a runner. The Illegal hits shelves on Sept. 8 and is already going to be made into a movie directed by Clement Virgo.

Hill, author of The Book of Negroes, has written his new work of fiction about Keita Ali, a young runner from the fictional country Zantoroland. Living in a state of political unrest, running is an escape and an activity respected by Ali’s peers. When his dad’s political opinions get his family in trouble, running becomes a way of survival.

He escapes his country and lives as a refugee in a nearby country with citizens who want him out. Living an underground life and constantly being on the move, Ali starts to earn money by showing up to local road races which off cash prizes.

Fans of the author can also see him speak. He’ll be touring Canada throughout fall, visiting small towns and major cities. Those looking to see him can see his dates here.
