Canadian Aaron Brown joined an exclusive club on Saturday at the Star Athletics meet in Florida. Brown, a graduate of the University of Southern California, ran 9.96 bettering his previous best of 10.05 to join the sub-10 club, one of the most well-known benchmarks in track and field.

According to Athletics Canada, the national governing body for track and field, Brown is just the fourth Canadian in history to have broken the 10-second barrier in the 100m. The others are Donovan Bailey, Bruny Surin and Andre De Grasse. Ben Johnson ran 9.79 but his results were later annulled for doping.

Bailey is the Canadian record holder having run 9.84.

The 24-year-old ran 9.96 in the event’s preliminaries beating out Tyson Gay in ideal conditions as the wind was at the maximum allowable level, a 2.0 metre-per-second tailwind. Brown would go on to finish second in the event’s finals in 10.01. The race was held in Montverde.

Brown, a native of Toronto, is also on the verge of breaking the 20-second barrier in the 200m, a significant milestone. His best in the event is 20.00, which he ran on April 30 in Baton Rouge, La. The Canadian finished second at the Rome Diamond League in early June in the 200m and is looking good ahead of the Rio Olympics.

He and De Grasse are expected to be on the men’s 4x100m relay along with Brendon Rodney and one other Canadian though the team has yet to be officially announced. Brown’s a two-time world championship bronze medallist in the 4x100m relay and represented Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
